Being an effective ADAS technician matters more than ever, as shops struggle to keep pace with how quickly the landscape changes. The technicians who do well are the ones willing to learn, adjust, and work within the controlled chaos that defines the industry today.

This guide lays out a realistic path for aspiring ADAS technicians, including what other guides fail to mention: what it actually takes to stay current, and why that’s what separates techs who succeed from those who don’t.

What the role actually involves (beyond the job title)

Successful ADAS calibration involves more than just measuring target board distances and bracket angles. Techs need a real grasp of diagnostics, fluency in OEM procedure language, precision in setup, and an understanding of the unique requirements each vehicle carries. 

The ADAS workflow spans from pre-scan through confirmation of requirements, setup, calibration, post-scan, with documentation across the entire process. The calibration step itself tends to be the shortest part of the job, with verification, documentation, and setup accounting for the largest and most important parts of the job.

During pre-scans, techs look for trouble codes (DTCs) to identify what needs to be addressed. Experienced techs know that DTCs don’t necessarily point to necessary ADAS calibrations, nor does the lack of DTCs mean that no calibrations are needed. The best techs lean on each OEM’s Service Information, which spells out exactly what calibrations are required in a given scenario.

Once the needed calibrations are confirmed, setup must meet these same OEM requirements dictated by the Service Information. Environmental standards are non-negotiable and never one-size-fits-all. 

Techs must follow each step as intended by the OEM, confirm successful calibration and a clean post-scan, and document every decision along the way. Waiting to document until the end of the procedure creates gaps and wastes time trying to piece together the process. 

Learning how these processes shift with changing OEMs and legislation is vital, and you won’t learn them from certification courses alone. Instead, successful techs must see each vehicle as a learning opportunity, keeping an open mind to the fact that change is necessary, and knowing that complacency costs them.

The technical foundation you need to get started

A strong base in vehicle electronics and diagnostics matters more than any single certification. As a tech, you’ll wear many different hats, including ADAS specialist, mechanic, and tool technician all while having to verify estimator work, and produce documentation that protects the shop from liability concerns and insurance pushbacks.

Scan tool and equipment proficiency

Techs must be familiar with both OEM and aftermarket scanners, knowing how to use, read, clear, and leverage these tools in the right scenarios. Not all scanners are interchangeable, as OEMs dictate which scan tools must be used to remain compliant. 

Using the wrong scan tool, or misusing the correct one, can invalidate the process, expose the shop to liability, lead to denied insurance claims, and result in improperly calibrated systems. 

The best approach is to learn how to use industry-leading aftermarket scanners from Autel and Bosch, while getting familiar with factory-issue scan software, such as Toyota’s Techstream, Honda’s i-HDS, and GM’s GDS2, which are compatible with specific pass-through devices, such as the J2534, connecting OEM software via a vehicle’s OBD-II port.

Static calibration has real physical requirements such as bay space dimensions, target distances, lighting, and more. Understanding of ADAS modules

From cameras to radars to LiDAR, techs need to have a solid understanding of different ADAS systems, including how they vary between manufacturers. For example, field of view can change from a forward-facing camera on a Toyota Camry vs on a Ford Escape. 

Manufacturers quickly roll out new technology, and legislation tightens specs. Knowing about these modules is only half the battle; staying current on how OEM requirements evolve is the other half.

OEM literacy

Technical reading comprehension is a skill that many “how to” guides fail to mention as central to a technician’s day-to-day skillset. OEM position statements are the backbone of successful calibration as they describe when and how calibrations must be performed.

The hardest part of being an effective ADAS technician is staying current. You should ask yourself on each job: What needs calibrating? and How should I calibrate it?

Since the answer to those questions changes rapidly, never rely on procedures you used previously without checking it again.
