ADAS camera sensors: What they power and when to calibrate

Every ADAS calibration is different, and every shop is different.

A Honda Civic windshield calibration in a low cost of living area shouldn't cost the same as a Mercedes S-Class multi-sensor alignment that’s conducted in NYC. Your regular fleet customer deserves different pricing than a one-time insurance job.

Yet most shops struggle with inflexible pricing systems that force manual invoice adjustments, creating inconsistencies and payment delays.

Revv's custom pricing engine changes everything. Set your base rates, create unlimited pricing variations, and let the system automatically apply the right charges for every situation. In this post, we’ll explain how it works and how it benefits shops like yours.

Building your custom pricing foundation

You want the estimate and invoice process to run as smoothly as possible. That means having the option to create custom base rates for your shop and then adjust them as needed.

You start with your shop’s base pricing structure in Revv. We offer national average pricing as a default so you can get started right away. If warranted, you can also customize calibration and labor charges to fit your shop’s needs—perhaps $150/hour for labor and $350 for certain calibrations. These rates are automatically applied to all relevant invoices when our software detects that calibrations are needed, unless you later decide to make job-by-job adjustments.

Keep in mind that different calibrations require different effort. Forward radar might take 30 minutes while surround-view cameras take 2 hours. Revv lets you set specific prices for each procedure type, ensuring accurate charging every time.

Automatic fee customization

Revv's power lies in automatic fee adjustments based on rules you define, helping reduce manual data entry and speeding up the estimate and invoicing processes.

Research fee automation

Not all calibrations require equal research effort. Revv automatically adds appropriate research fees based on vehicle classification. For example, you can customize research fees and also have additional fees for foreign or luxury vehicles. Here’s an example:

  • Domestic vehicles: $20 for standard research
  • Japanese vehicles (Honda, Toyota, Nissan): $20-25 depending on complexity
  • European luxury vehicles (BMW, Audi, Mercedes): $30 for premium research requirements

These fees reflect industry standards, as most shops across the country follow similar pricing structures based on the complexity of accessing and interpreting manufacturer-specific information.

Luxury vehicle upcharges

High-end vehicles require extra care and carry higher liability. Revv allows you to customize your pricing accordingly. As an example, you may choose to adjust pricing based on different tiers of luxury vehicles:

  • Tier 1 luxury (Lexus, Acura): 15% upcharge
  • Tier 2 luxury (BMW, Mercedes): 25% upcharge
  • Exotic brands (Ferrari, Lamborghini): 50% upcharge

Implementing insurance-specific pricing strategies

Different insurers have different requirements and reimbursement rates. Revv's ability to customize your baseline rates in these situations is essential.

You can create specific pricing for DRP relationships that might require discounted rates but provide volume, for example,  or set higher rates for non-DRP insurers where you have pricing flexibility. Offer competitive customer-pay rates while maintaining profitability.

Accounting for volume and relationship pricing

Reward loyal customers without sacrificing profitability on one-time jobs.

For example, you can automatically apply fleet discounts based on volume tiers, or give regular customers courtesy discounts based on history. You can also consider introductory discounts for first-time customers or wholesale rates for shops sending you work.

Revv can also create different versions of invoices that can reflect any discounts or markups. For instance, it’s possible to create three different versions: one for the calibration center doing the calibration and one for the end-user client and their insurance company for reimbursement.

Leveraging seamless integration with CCC and Mitchell

Revv eliminates data entry through deep integrations with platforms like CCC ONE and Mitchell. When estimates are created, Revv automatically receives vehicle information, repair operations, and insurance details. This triggers calibration identification with your custom pricing rules applied automatically.

Bi-directional sync with CCC means calibration data is sent back to your estimates and invoicing automatically. Charges appear on estimates without manual entry, and documentation attaches to claim files.

The entire process is streamlined, creating estimates with your shop’s custom pricing and then syncs the data with third-party tools to prevent manual errors or delays that can easily happen during re-keying.

Explaining ADAS custom pricing to customers

Custom pricing only works if customers understand the charges. Revv's invoices break down charges clearly with automatic explanations for common questions.

You might get a customer asking why their BMW’s windshield replacement costs a solid chunk more than their husband’s Honda Accord that was just in last year. They might even bring up a “luxury” charge listed on their invoice.

The best practice is transparency. You can explain that the costs of accessing OEM documentation, training, or parts for the luxury vehicle comes with increased costs, resulting in the luxury charge on their invoice.

Make sure that your customer service reps and service advisors are given training on how to explain charges that may frustrate customers, such as luxury charges or research fees. This can help your team confidently discuss estimates with customers and explain your shop’s custom pricing approach.

How to roll out custom pricing for your shop

Rolling out custom pricing requires careful planning to ensure smooth adoption, happy customers, and maximum profitability.

1. Provide clear documentation about base rates and customization rules

Create comprehensive documentation before going live.

Detail your standard labor rates, base calibration charges, and every customization rule. Ideally, include examples showing how prices calculate for different scenarios. Go over how a Toyota Camry with insurance coverage might have different pricing from a BMW with customer pay or a fleet vehicle with volume discounts.

This documentation becomes your team's reference guide and training material, ensuring everyone applies custom pricing consistently from day one.

2. Communicate changes: Ensure team understands pricing logic

Hold a team meeting before implementation to explain not just what's changing, but why. This can include:

  • Showing examples of how custom pricing benefits both the shop and customers.
  • Creating quick reference cards for service advisors showing common scenarios.
  • Posting pricing matrices in visible locations.

When everyone understands the reasoning behind pricing decisions, they can confidently explain them to customers.

3. Monitor results: Track revenue and satisfaction impacts

Establish baseline metrics before implementing custom pricing. You should monitor average ticket value, customer complaints about pricing, insurance approval rates, and time spent on invoicing to track how the new pricing is impacting revenue, insurance reimbursements, and customer satisfaction (CSAT) scores.

You should track these metrics closely  for the first few months, and then you can assess quarterly. This way, if certain rules or fees consistently cause problems or confusion, you'll spot patterns quickly. Moreover, you can always use the data to optimize your rate card to account for cost change or to improve profits.

Your pricing transformation starts today

Manual pricing adjustments at volume waste time, create inconsistencies, and leave money on the table. The last thing you want to do is have a team looking up or adjusting the price of a camera sensor calibration every time an applicable repair comes through the doors.

Revv's custom pricing engine captures every dollar you deserve while maintaining transparency that customers and insurers appreciate.

The system pays for itself by ensuring you never undercharge for complex work or miss applicable fees, all while instantly determining which calibrations are needed for each vehicle based on the assessed repairs. This frees your team from manual calculations and research, letting them focus on customer service and quality repairs.
